On February 6, 2021, Ousmane Sonko was accused of rape at gunpoint and death threats by Adji Sarr, an employee of Sweet Beauty SPA. The affair, which deeply shook the country for more than three years, continues to fuel public debate. In an interview with DND TV, Serigne Mbacké Ndiaye spoke of Madiambal Diagne's mediation efforts with the leader of Pastef.
The facts date back to February 6, 2021, when Adji Sarr filed a complaint against Ousmane Sonko for “repeated rapes” and “death threats”. At this time, Sonko, already a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, was directly involved in the affair.
On March 3, 2021, the deputy and mayor of Ziguinchor was officially indicted and summoned by the senior judge of the Dakar court. Escorted by his supporters, Ousmane Sonko leaves his home in Cité Keur Gorgui to go to the courthouse. He was arrested for “disturbing public order”, before being released under judicial supervision, after several days of riots across the country. These riots, which lasted almost three years, caused several victims and caused numerous lootings, until Pastef came to power on March 24.
Since then, the Adji Sarr affair has remained at the center of the news. In an interview on DND TV, the former minister under President Wade and leader of the Patriotic Liberal Convergence (CLP), Serigne Mbacké Ndiaye, made an important revelation. He explained that, contrary to some claims, Madiambal Diagne played a major role in the search for peace and reconciliation in Senegal, working to prevent Sonko from facing legal problems in this matter.
“I have proof that Madiambal Diagne was one of the people who worked to ensure that Ousmane Sonko had no problem in this affair, just like Macky Sall. They sought to resolve the Sweet Beauty matter amicably. It was in this room that I met Ousmane Sonko. Before his arrival, I called Madiambal Diagne, who assured me that he would do everything to resolve this problem quickly. He also advised me to call President Macky Sall to inform him. I followed his advice and Macky Sall told me the same thing. Madiambal Diagne was among the first to be informed of the Adji Sarr affair,” he revealed, before returning to an important call from the Minister of Justice at the time, Me Malick Sall.
“During a videoconference council of ministers, Me Malick Sall informed the President of the matter. “That’s when Macky Sall learned the news, while Madiambal Diagne knew about it much earlier and was thinking of silencing the rumor,” he added.
