“I still have the RCT in my heart. I am a fan of rugby and of Toulon in particular. It is not today that that will change.” Christophe Charaut assures him, if he is about to launch his latest Pilou Pilou, he is not leaving angry. Maybe a little bitter…
When he started in 2019, it was a childhood dream come true. “We represent the club, it’s important. The pressure is there, every time. Obviously”he readily admits. Same for pleasure. Although this last year it has been a little tarnished.
“No favoritism”
“Since I took over three beach concessions at Mourillon last spring, IThere are a lot of comments from people who are not necessarily well-intentioned. Some people think that if I got them, it’s because I sang Pilou Pilou. Although it has nothing to do with it. I worked twenty years like crazy to get here, the RCT has nothing to do with it.” he emphasizes.
These remarks on social networks, without touching him – he assures – still made him think. “These accusations of favoritism are unfair. And to cut it short, perhaps I should abandon my role as launcher of Pilou Pilou. So that people can really distinguish between my work and my passion. I have never used the RCT for professional purposes.” Moreover, today, he says it loud and clear, he prefers to devote himself to his business.
“The atmosphere has changed”
What also tipped the decision was also the atmosphere around the RCT in recent months. “I no longer necessarily recognize myself in the way some people support. We come upon people very quickly and very hard. Without making generalizations, there is often nastiness and aggressiveness.”
During his discussions with the club, Christophe Charaut was not necessarily reassured. “Honestly, I no longer find myself in the functioning of the club. I don’t really understand the policy that is being pursued. But, I knew from the start, Pilou Pilou does not belong to me. It belongs to the people of Mayol. “
Today, the restaurateur wants to choose his exit, happy with five years of great adventures. And this outing will be this Saturday afternoon against Pau.
His best memories
A few hours before kick-off, it’s time to take stock. Christophe Charaut has many beautiful memories linked to “terrible war cry”. “I remember my first time at the stadium. What emotion! I almost passed out. It was against Lyon. And then, there was also the first Vélodrome. A legendary stadium, even if I’m not an OM supporter! This resonance, this world, it was simply impressive.”
When it comes to bad memories, it’s more difficult to choose for him: “but the defeat in the Challenge Cup final against Lou. It should have been a great celebration, it ended in big disappointment.”
Who to succeed him?
To access this prestigious role in 2019, Christophe Charaut participated in a competition organized by the club. He then traveled across Toulon to convince the inhabitants to vote for him. Will the formula be renewed this time? The club has not yet commented on the subject.
