The Federal Council wants to stem the “irresponsible” dog trade. The professional importation of puppies aged less than 15 weeks will therefore be prohibited.
New animal protection requirements apply in Switzerland from February 1. In particular, the professional importation of puppies aged less than 15 weeks will be prohibited.
Only individuals who personally pick up their puppy from the breeder abroad will be authorized to import dogs aged less than 15 weeks, the Federal Council decided on Friday, as part of the partial revision of the ordinance on the animal protection.
With this measure, the government wants to stem the “irresponsible” trade in dogs from abroad, which often takes place via the Internet, where very young puppies are offered for sale. The aim is therefore to reduce the number of these “thoughtless” online purchases.
Slaughter of male chicks
It will also be prohibited to shorten the tails of lambs, a practice already prohibited for all other species. A new provision must also make it possible to abandon the slaughter of male chicks, which are of no use in the laying lines. The amendment to the ordinance takes into account new methods allowing early sexing in the egg.
The holding and treatment of experimental animals will also be modified to enhance their well-being. The extension of mandatory announcements for these animals will increase transparency. (ats)
