A nest. A roof. Language uses these images to represent the notion of home, illustrating that it must be a cocoon, a protection. There, in the shelter, every child is supposed to be able to grow and flourish in safety. For many of them, unfortunately, this is not the case. Sara De Brito Faustino is one of them. The young graduate and now academic assistant at the Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) grew up in a dysfunctional home, which she evokes in the exhibition A Home with No Roofcurrently shown at L’Appartement – the Vevey Images gallery, which explores contemporary photographic creation between two editions of the biennial.

The Dutch-Portuguese artist takes us into the domestic space that was hers through self-portraits or, in reference to childhood, through reduced models that she photographs, sometimes including – in a blurring of scales – casts of fragments of his body. She immerses us even more, by transforming the rooms of L’Appartement into copies of parts of her home, notably adding blue carpet as well as specific taps and colors for the bathtub. The mise en abyme thus created physically engages the spectators, immersed in its reality.
