This figure allows the region to rise to 5th place among the most populated regions behind Île-de-France, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, Nouvelle Aquitaine and Occitanie.
The study carried out by INSEE extends from 2016 to 2022 and shows that the regional population has remained almost stable over this six-year period. While the rest of France recorded growth of 0.4% per year on average.
Nevertheless, the North remains the most populated department in the metropolitan area with 2,616,909 inhabitants, ahead of Paris and Bouches-du-Rhône. But Pas-de-Calais, Aisne and Somme are experiencing demographic decline.
