Curfew for minors (under 16) in Cureghem on New Year’s Eve: but what does a minor have to gain in the middle of the street at night?

The curfew, it is legitimate, is already divisive.

This is a deprivation of liberty which will restrict and could frustrate kids who had no malicious intent. It will, irremediably, contribute to stigmatizing a very specific part of the population, from a very locally defined point. We can hear it.

Homemade bombs, fireworks at New Year’s Eve: “the anti-attack plans were of no use”, denounces the liberal firefighters’ union

But on the other hand, can we ignore the burned cars around the Gare du Midi every year on New Year’s Eve? Pyrotechnic devices used against law enforcement? These facts have been there for a long time, irremediably, unfortunately… That a mayor acts to deal with them does not shock us. However, it remains to be seen whether the measure will be effective. And will not generate more clashes than it hopes to quell, through a massive movement of young people elsewhere or a protest gathering to defy the new ban.

Finally, as a bottom line, this question, the responsibility of which falls on parents and not on municipalities: is the place of a minor under sixteen on the street, without legal guardian, at night, even on 12/31? ? Maybe it’s old-fashionedbut to ask the question, in our eyes, is to answer it: no.
