Bruised Mayotte: Métropole strengthens aid to victims of Cyclone Chido

« The second report concerns a French overseas department which was hit by the greatest climatic disaster that has known in its entire history. Several hundred, even several thousand, losses, numerous deaths, a landscape of desolation! And a national day of contemplation which will take place on Monday, in memory of the deceased populations“. It is with these words that the president of the metropolitan council yesterday evening invited elected officials to observe a minute of silence, in memory of the people who died during the passage of Cyclone Chido on December 15, 2024.

The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, was in Mayotte this Thursday, and he will be there again this Friday. He announced national mourning for Monday, December 23, after the passage of Cyclone Chido which ravaged the archipelago. It is ” the most serious natural disaster in the history of France for several centuries”declared Prime Minister François Bayrou. A still very provisional toll shows 31 deaths, but it should be much higher. This is why the prefect launched a search mission to find the missing. As for the survivors, they lack everything.

François Rebsamen proposed, after the minute of silence, the vote for an exceptional grant of €50,000: “ Exceptionally, I propose to grant a grant in support of the Mahorais people to the tune of €50,000, which will be paid to Secouristes sans Frontières“. As a reminder, during the last municipal council of the city of , which was held on Monday December 16, the city also voted for a subsidy of €50,000, a subsidy paid to the French Red Cross to help the Mahorese people.
