The French Prime Minister, François Bayrou, announced a special law for the reconstruction of Mayotte, a French archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, ravaged last Saturday by Cyclone Chido.
Bayrou spoke during a television interview on Thursday evening on “France 2”.
The Prime Minister described the damage caused by the cyclone as “very costly”.
“To replace a roof (…) it is between 60 thousand and 80 thousand euros. And as there are at least 80 thousand houses affected, you see the sum in billions of euros that this represents,” he said. -he explained.
“The State is present and will be present”, he reassured, announcing that there will be “a special law which will be presented to Parliament (…) to be able to accelerate the deadlines”, he said. added.
Bayrou also announced a deadline of 2 years to rebuild the stricken island, describing this reconstruction as an “immense” and “superhuman” task.
As a reminder, Mayotte, the poorest French department located in the Indian Ocean, was hit hard by Cyclone Chido last Saturday, with winds exceeding 220 km/h, devastating all the precarious homes in the archipelago. .
According to a provisional report established by hospital services, 31 people lost their lives, while more than 1,400 others were injured. Local authorities, on the other hand, fear an even heavier toll, of hundreds, even thousands, of victims.
A crisis unit had been set up in Paris on Saturday and the resigning ministers of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, and Overseas Ministers, François-Noël Buffet, went there on Monday to supervise the relief and delivery of aid.
President Macron also traveled to Mayotte on Thursday, announcing that priority will be given to water and food.
Several appeals for donations were also launched the day after the disaster. No less than 14 million euros have already been collected so far by the Fondation de France in favor of the Mahorais archipelago.
Also, the authorities announced reinforcements of 160 firefighters and aid of 20 tons of food and medicine.
