For a year, Sèvremoine (Maine-et-Loire) has been working on its soft mobility plan, with several objectives: raising awareness of bicycle and pedestrian travel, moving towards more economical and less polluting travel.
“We are talking here about daily journeys to places of education: school, middle schools, high school; towards major activity sites, towards local shopping areas, towards Torfou station”, explains Paul Nerrière, assistant to the technical services department. Several public meetings took place in the delegated municipalities to present the projects and take into account the comments of the usage experts.

“A common goal”
The year 2024 focused on actions in the heart of towns; 2025 will see the first achievements between the towns. The Department supports studies between national recommendations, recommendations and legal texts. Consistency is necessary, particularly with the departmental roads which cross the localities: “Development throughout the national territory helps to establish locally, brings better understanding, a common goal. »
The Sèvres municipal police are also consulted. New routes, to be taken on foot, by bike or by scooter, will appear to connect the delegated municipalities, between the town centers and important localities, for example between Tillières and la Poterie. However, land acquisitions are necessary in order to create roads separate from the roadways.
“Pedagogy and training”
By verifying the relevance of certain developments, elected officials have reversed course on the resurfacing of cycle lanes: “Sand tracks are quickly damaged by bad weather or if a heavy vehicle maneuvers on them. The choice of bitumen also allows cyclists to arrive at their work with clean bottoms. »
The aim of encouraging people to cycle or walk is to relieve congestion on local streets at certain times (hiring, school entry and exit). “The creation of this equipment will be accompanied by education and training, such as the “Know how to ride a bike” offered to schoolchildren,” adds the deputy, aware of the dangerousness of certain places.
Recalcitrants
However, elected officials also know that there are diehards. “Whatever the adjustments, certain drivers, estimated at 15%, do not change their behavior. However, these developments provide legitimacy to these modes of travel,” recalls Sébastien Dessein, delegate for public space and living environment, member of the dedicated working group.
