Despite rumors circulating about him, former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney will not be Minister of Finance, according to the new federal Minister of Finance, Dominic LeBlanc.
Mr. LeBlanc made this statement Thursday morning during an interview on the show La matinale, on ICI - Acadie radio.
“When the Prime Minister asked me to be Minister of Finance, he said to me: “Mr. Carney will not be the Minister of Finance,” said Mr. LeBlanc.
“I’m not looking back at Mr. Carney, I’m doing the job the Prime Minister gave me. He clearly told me that it will be up to me to prepare the budget to be presented to the House of Commons in the spring,” he continued.
Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government has been in turmoil since Monday, when Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, resigned in a resounding manner.
Mme Freeland revealed, in a letter, that Mr. Trudeau had informed her last Friday that he intended to replace her as Minister of Finance, while offering her another position within his cabinet. She instead chose to leave the Council of Ministers.
Rumors have been circulating for some time about the possible replacement of Mme Freeland by Mr. Carney, who was governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
