Through his recurring jokes about Canada, which he is beginning to believe, American President-elect Donald Trump is seeking to weaken the Liberal government with the prospect of negotiating a new trade agreement.

At least this is the conclusion reached by political analyst Stéphan Bureau, invited to TVA Nouvelles’ Téléjournal on Wednesday evening, not without wondering about the ulterior motives of the author of these repeated jokes.
“This is the question we can perhaps ask ourselves when he decided once again to come back to this concept of the 51st State by saying that Canadians would be happy, well protected and they would pay less taxes,” observed Mr. Office.
In the middle of the night on Wednesday, Donald Trump did it again by making a new comment on his social network to once again evoke his idea which he finds “excellent” of making Canada the 51st American state.
“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state. They would save massively on taxes and military spending. I think it’s an excellent idea. 51st State!” he argued on Truth Social.
Mr. Bureau, who wonders if the Republican billionaire is beginning to believe his joke of attaching Canada to the United States, draws a parallel with the purchase of Louisiana in 1803 for 15 million dollars, doubting the interest of such a transaction for Mr. Trump.
But beyond the joke, the political columnist detects in Donald Trump the search for potential political gains by opening a front with Canada with the obvious aim of weakening Canadian leaders when the time comes to renegotiate the new trade agreement.
“But we can think that it is less and less of a joke for the president who has decided to put in place a political strategy, let’s say, innovative to say the least, if not insulting for many Canadians,” concluded Mr. Bureau.
