What are the most populated towns in the Pyrénées-Orientales? This Thursday, December 19, INSEE, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, revealed its latest demographic figures in . News Perpignan wanted to analyze the ranking of the largest municipalities in the department: and some changes can be noted in just one year.

Change on the podium

Unsurprisingly, the most populated city in the Pyrénées-Orientales remains, by far, Perpignan. The Catalan city, which had lost a few thousand inhabitants in recent years, is back above 120,000 inhabitants, with more precisely 120,996 inhabitants on 1is January 2022 (date on which INSEE reports its latest figures).

Perpignan remains like this the fourth largest city in the regionbehind (511,684 inhabitants), (307,101 inhabitants) and Nîmes (150,444 inhabitants), and ahead of Béziers (80,815 inhabitants), (62,487 inhabitants) and (56,692 inhabitants). ).

In the Pyrénées-Orientales, far behind Perpignan, the podium is completed by Canet-en-Roussillon, which stands out as the second city in the department with 13,005 inhabitants… Et Saint-Cyprien, the neighboring seaside resort, which this year becomes the 3e most populous city in the Catalan country with 11,995 inhabitants, relegating Saint-Estève 4e and off the podium (11,673 inhabitants).

Soon 500,000 inhabitants in the Pyrénées-Orientales

This is the other major lesson from this new INSEE demographic study: the Pyrénées-Orientales department had 492,964 inhabitants on January 1, 2022, a record. The Catalan country has never been so populated, so much so that the symbolic bar of 500,000 should even be exceeded in 2025.
