“We don’t realize the seriousness of the situation.” In Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), the France Palestine Solidarité association wants to raise awareness. What happens out of sight, in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, must no longer be out of mind.
2 million inhabitants in an area not much larger than Saint-Malo Agglo
“Join us”, say its kingpins who call for “empathy” from the population of Saint-Malo. “Gaza is a territory not much bigger than Saint-Malo Agglomération where 2 million inhabitants are crowded together. You can imagine the population density. The impact of an explosion there? » asks Armelle Brière, long-time member of the association.
“They have no water, no more hospitals. We no longer have the words to describe this massacre which left at least 45,000 dead, mostly women and children,” denounce Daniel Gestin, Alain Berthelot and Michel Huet, active members of the AFPS.
“And we condemn the Hamas attack of October 7. A war crime has been committed,” Françoise Deschamps also wishes to point out.
Friendship and solidarity
Created thirty years ago under the leadership of Jean Lemaître and then of France Chapa, France Palestine Solidarité Pays de Saint-Malo was formed as an association 22 years ago, with the desire to promote “solidarity and friendship with the Palestinian people,” recalls its president Françoise Deschamps.
Gatherings, films, debates and even solidarity meals are organized. The money raised helps a Palestinian cooperative which produces grape juice and also provides educational and psychological support activities.
“Today we feel a little alone. We would like our association to be better known. Unfortunately, the town hall doesn’t help us much. We asked to raise the Palestinian flag in the same way as the Ukrainian flag. Request which was refused to us. »
The association, which “demands an immediate end to the aggression against the Palestinian people”, is organizing a new rally in front of the Saint-Malo station, this Saturday, December 21, at 5 p.m.
