While waiting for public services to be restored, volunteers are mobilizing to respond to the emergency in Mayotte. Report from volunteers.
By air or by sea, solidarity took on a new dimension on Wednesday, December 18. On a container ship on the island of Reunion, 3,000 tonnes of water, food, military vehicles and medical supplies are being loaded. “Tonight, approximately 200 containers will be delivered to Mayotte on Sunday. In these 200 containers, there are 88 containers of water”, explains Patrice Latron, the prefect of Réunion.
Boats between Reunion and Mayotte deliver donations from all over France. The call for volunteers goes through social networks. “We need labor. We need staff.”assures Raicha Kabayla, volunteer for Solidarité Mayotte. In Amiens (Somme), the Emergency Architects foundation plans to deliver whole rolls of tarpaulins to urgently replace gutted roofs.
Money donations are also pouring in by telephone: dn the evening of Tuesday, an exceptional tax deduction of 75% up to 1,000 euros was announced by the Prime Minister. In Paris, the 10 million euro donation mark was crossed by the Fondation de France.
