Although the rain melted almost all the beautiful snow that had fallen in Quebec, there is still hope for a white Christmas this year.
After a few days of milder weather, “the temperature should plummet throughout the day tomorrow to return to temperatures close to seasonal norms,” confirms Jean-Philippe Bégin, meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada.
These colder temperatures will help keep the few flakes that should fall over southern Quebec on Friday.
Estrie should also receive an accumulation of 2 to 5 cm of snow from Wednesday night to Thursday, which should whiten the ground a little. It is especially the summits and high terrain which are expected to receive up to 5 cm of snow.
For your travels this weekend
For those planning to hit the road this weekend to visit their family for the holidays, you will need to be careful in certain areas.
A snowstorm will hit the Maritimes on Saturday, according to Environment Canada and is expected to affect Gaspésie and the North Shore.
The Lower North Shore should expect to receive a lot of snow.
The south of the province should also receive snowflakes, but more moderately.
“Between Friday and Saturday noon, we should get 2 to 4 cm of snow in greater Montreal and Montérégie. Near the American border, we can expect 4-5 cm,” explains Jean-Philippe Bégin.
And for Christmas?
A few snowflakes may appear on December 24 or 25, but nothing to complicate travel to family gatherings.
On Tuesday, December 24, a Great Lakes system could energize and bring a few more inches of snow, but that is still uncertain.
“There would be just a bit of magical snow for Christmas, to be confirmed, but no major storm, or mixed type of precipitation,” summarizes the meteorologist.
As for New Year’s Day, it is still too early to predict the weather systems that will hit Quebec.
