Every year, we see a little more of them on the side of our roads. In the Pyrénées-Orientales, the main roads (except the A9 motorway) are all equipped with radars to control the speed of different road users.
According to our count, carried out using site data radars-auto.comthere would be 26 (not counting autonomous radars, which can be dismantled and moved) throughout the department. We tell you where.
The radar map of the Pyrénées-Orientales
The most monitored roads are D900the famous departmental road which crosses the department from the north (Salse-le-Château) to the south (Le Perthus), and the D914which connects Perpignan to the Côte Vermeille (via Argelès-sur-Mer), with four radars.
Unsurprisingly, this map allows us to realize that the majority of radars are located in the Roussillon plain. We also see that speed is particularly monitored on the seaside (D914, D81, D83).
On the D81the turret radar located between the Luna Park roundabout in Argelès plage and the Saint-Cyprien south roundabout was installed at the start of 2024. On the same road, between Saint-Laurent-de-la -Salanque and the ramp which connects the 2×2 lanes to Le Barcarès, another system was created last March.
More recently, in October, the Pyrénées-Orientales prefecture deployed a similar machine upon arrival in Perpignan from Canet-en-Roussillon (via the D617). This radar should make it possible to limit accidents on this axis.
Still no radar on the A9 motorway
Surprising fact: the A9 motorwayalthough it is still very busy (both by cars and heavy goods vehicles), is not equipped with radar on the section which crosses the Pyrénées-Orientales. This was not always the case.
Those who have memories probably remember a fixed radar installed at the level of Clusesin the descent from Spain towards France. The latter has not existed for several years.
In 2023, two radars disappeared from the Pyrénées-Orientales. These are the turrets of Villeneuve-de-la-Rahoon the D8, and that of the D612a, between Toulouges et Thuir.
Perpignan, French radar champion
On the Perpignan side, there are five radars pace control. If we also take those who monitor the crossing of red lights, we drop to 17 devices.
Last May, the magazine AutoPlus awarded the title of “French radar champion” to the Catalan city, with one radar for 9,204 inhabitants. The city is ahead of Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle), with one radar per 10,426 inhabitants, and Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), with one radar per 11,816 inhabitants. Note that at the time of this study, the D617 radar had not yet been installed in Perpignan.
Soon a new radar in the Pyrénées-Orientales?
A new type of radar could also see the light of day in French municipalities. Named “ Hydra», this noise reduction device, designed by the Ile-de-France organization Bruitparif and tested in several cities in France, fines vehicles exceeding the85 decibels.
Will it be deployed from 2025 in the Pyrénées-Orientales? Asked by News Perpignan At the beginning of December, the prefecture had no information to provide us with on this subject.
