The group Ziskakan celebrates its 45 years of career with a major concert in Saint-Denis de La Réunion

Ziskakan? How long will this emblematic group from Island, founded in 1979, continue to distill its music made of Indian sounds, African percussion and Creole texts? How long will the group led by its charismatic leader Gilbert Pounia fight for the promotion and transmission of Creole culture in Reunion? How long will he continue to travel the world to promote the music and rhythms from Reunion Island?

Ziskakan, will this institution continue? No one can predict it, but the fact remains that it has been going on for 45 years. 45 years since Ziskakan, whose history is intertwined with that of the Reunion cultural movement, has carried the colors and musical sounds of Reunion high. An anniversary that the flagship group of the Reunion music scene began to celebrate by beginning a tour called « Great Indian Tour 2 » which took him for a month (from February to March 2024) to India and Nepal and to many other stages around the world.

A constant commitment to preserving and promoting Reunion’s identity

A tour which ends with a major concert at the Cité des Arts in Saint-Denis, in Reunion Island, where it all began, 45 years ago. A return to the sources which marks the group’s desire to conclude in apotheosis, at home, this “World Zikakan Tour”. Because more than a concert, this evening on its Reunion lands is a celebration of Creole identity, a tribute to the musical history of the group and is understood as the desire to build a bridge between generations. This anniversary evening certainly aims to entertain, but also to educate and inspire, reflecting the group’s constant commitment to the preservation and enhancement of Reunion’s identity. It is also an opportunity for the group to present its future projects.

Earlier in December, the Reunion public was able to attend the screening of the documentary “Ziskakan, a Creole revolution » by Reunion journalist and director Sébastien Folin. A film that looks back on the struggles of the 70s when the group fought to have the Creole language and culture recognized in a context of censorship and marginalization. Ziskakan has been proudly carrying the standard of Creole music and culture for 45 years and it is not about to stop as the public, all generations combined, are asking for more.
