One of the oldest businesses in , “Cafés Legal”, will disappear. 110 employees will be laid off. A hard blow for the entire city after 170 years of existence.

On the heights of Le Havre (Seine-Maritime), the doors of the Cafés Legal factory are closed this Wednesday, December 18. The business is closing permanently. The cessation of production takes effect immediately, as does the dismissal of 110 employees. “We were still in difficulty. Afterwards, we have no choice… We are all disappointed, it’s sickening”confides Julien Schmaltz, roaster and for 12 years at Legal.

A feeling shared by the inhabitants of the region. “Just before the holidays, it’s not a nice Christmas present for them.” deplores Thomas Thierry. The iconic coffee slogan, “Legal, taste”, has left its mark on generations. Particularly popular in the 80s and 90s, the Norman company had been based in Le Havre for 170 years.

It was a historic and essential institution for the city. The significant increase in coffee prices has seriously weakened the company, after a complicated period linked to Covid-19.
