Stabbing and Violence

A bloody brawl broke out last night in a bar in Cagnes-sur-Mer, leading to two serious knife injuries. A BAC police officer was also violently attacked while trying to arrest the suspect, who managed to flee…

During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, the tranquility of a neighborhood in Cagnes-sur-Mer was brutally shattered by a violent fight in a local bar. According to our information, an argument involving a very agitated woman quickly degenerated, resulting in two serious stabbing injuries and the attack on a police officer.

An evening that turns into a nightmare

According to the testimonies collected, the incident occurred around midnight at the Belgian Attitude, an establishment located on Boulevard Maréchal-Juin. A woman, visibly in an advanced state of intoxication, entered alone and began to verbally provoke several customers as well as the manager.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control. Exasperated by the remarks, the suspect took out a knife that she was hiding on her person. In the confusion that followed, the manager was stabbed in the abdomen and a customer was hit in the arm. Fortunately, their injuries turned out to be superficial.

The eventful arrival of the police

Alerted by numerous calls, agents from the Anti-Crime Brigade intervened on the scene within minutes. But upon their arrival, they were attacked by several alcoholic individuals, trying to intervene.

It was total confusion, everyone was shouting. Some were trying to protect the armed woman.

A witness to the scene

In the crowd, one of the police officers received a violent punch in the face. Despite this, he continued his mission and tried, with his colleagues, to control the suspect. But she managed to escape thanks to the surrounding chaos.

A suspect actively sought

Although his identity was able to be established thanks to the work of investigators, the suspect is still on the run as we write these lines. “All means are being used to locate and arrest her as quickly as possible”assured a source close to the matter.

The lives of the two injured are not in danger. They were able to return home after being treated. The attacked police officer suffered a broken nose and facial trauma. He was prescribed several days of temporary work interruption.

Tensions and worries

This event once again illustrates the rise of violence and insecurity in certain areas of our cities, including seaside towns known to be peaceful like Cagnes-sur-Mer. The aggressiveness and trivialization of carrying weapons greatly worries local residents.

Before it was a quiet neighborhood, now we are afraid to go out in the evening. This has to change.

A local resident

Local elected officials, challenged, promise strong measures but are struggling so far to stop the escalation. The right of the opposition even speaks of a “wilding” and a “loss of state control” on these lawless areas.

A social phenomenon

For specialists, this violence is only the symptom of a deeper malaise. Unemployment, idleness, broken family environment, they point to multiple factors explaining the increase in delinquent acts among young people.

  • Nearly one in five young people live below the poverty line
  • 18-25 year olds are the most affected by unemployment
  • One in three young people have already been victims of physical violence

To these socio-economic difficulties is often added a excessive alcohol or drug usean aggravating factor in committing violent acts. Finally, the health crisis and the various confinements have exacerbated intra-family tensions and psychological disorders.

What answers should we provide?

Faced with the emergency, all stakeholders in society must mobilize. Beyond the security and judicial response, we must tackle the roots of evil through ambitious prevention policies:

  • Strengthen social support and professional integration of young people
  • Develop sporting, cultural and civic activities in neighborhoods
  • Better train professionals in contact with vulnerable groups
  • Fight against trafficking and addictions

The task is immense but the survival of our republican pact depends on it. It is about cohesion of our society. The events in Cagnes-sur-Mer must serve as an electric shock. The time for observations and incantations is over, time for resolute and determined action. Our fellow citizens demand it, our youth deserve it.
