Olympique: “I said it didn’t bother me…” how did Jérémy Fernandez become the official scorer for the CO?

the essential
The CO scrum half is experiencing his first real season as a goalscorer. A role that he “likes a lot” and that he dissociates from the rest of the game.

Buter has always been one of Jérémy Fernandez’s qualities but the general public could not know it before the end of last season. Because he had very little opportunity to see his talents against the poles. To see them, you had to go to Levezou, where the kid from Mazamet never stopped practicing.

“I always struggled in my youth,” confides the scrum-half. When I arrived in the pro group, I scored less because there was Benjamin Urdapilleta in particular, a very good scorer. So, I was a little stuck and I focused more on my level of play than on the goal. Even if it’s an interesting palette, I wanted to be fulfilled in my game.”

Today, the Tarnais is well in his rugby and the responsibility for the goal is entrusted to him more and more. Particularly since the reception of Stade Français (27-18), last season, during the 25th day of the Top 14. Before, Jérémy Fernandez had only scored five points since his professional debut with Castres Olympique in November 2019 .

12e director of the Top 14

“At the end of last season, we spoke with the staff. I said that I didn’t mind taking the goal because I never stopped training,” remembers the man who currently occupies number 12e place in the ranking of the best directors of the championship thanks to his 61 points scored (12 penalties, 10 conversions and a try), eleven less than Louis Le Brun (8e director of the Top 14).

“I really like to score. For the moment, things aren’t going too bad even if in the last two matches, I haven’t had my best results on my feet (laughs). But these are the ups and downs of a goalscorer,” says Fernandez. The number nine of the CO refers to its failure at Northampton (8-38) and its two failures against Munster (16-14), last Friday.

The Top 14 therefore seems to smile more on him than the Champions Cup, he who has only experienced five failures in 27 attempts on the championship lawns. But the 27-year-old Olympian assures him, his misses against the poles do not impact his game: “The goal is for me another aspect of rugby. If you stay on your failure, you no longer move forward. It’s the law of sport. If you missed something, you have to switch quickly to catch up.” Knowing how to move on, even on a bad day, is the mark of great scorers. Jérémy Fernandez aspires to become one.
