In a press release, the City of Valencia (Drome) welcomes the release of Paul Watson. After 149 days in prison in Denmark, this environmental activist, known for his commitment to the protection of the oceans and endangered marine species, in particular the whaleswas released on Tuesday, December 17, following the decision of the Danish government not to extradite him to Japan.

He was accused by the country of the rising sun of being responsible for damage and injuries aboard a Japanese whaling ship in 2010. The founder of l’association Sea Shepherd was the subject of an international arrest warrant.

A local commitment for a global cause

As soon as his arrest was announced in Greenland, on July 21, 2024, “while preparing to block the path of the Kangei Maru, a huge Japanese whaler intended to massacre thousands of whales, the City of Valencia took a strong position,” continues the municipality.

Under the leadership of Nicolas Daragon, mayor of , the municipality invited citizens to mobilize for his release by signing a petition.
