With the CdM 2030, Morocco aims to consolidate its place as a tourist country

Morocco is mobilizing to host the next World Cup scheduled for 2030 and aims to make this event not only a footballing but also a tourist event to achieve its objective of making the Kingdom an essential tourism destination.

Co-organized with Spain and Portugal, the 2030 World Cup will be played between two neighboring continents and fans of world football will cross the Mediterranean using airport, rail and road routes to reach the cities where the tournament will take place. the matches.

Morocco welcomed 15.9 million tourists over the first 11 months of 2024, “a historic record, already exceeding the annual total for 2023”, observed the French daily Le Figaro, noting that in addition to airports, efforts are focused on the extension of the high-speed rail network which should by 2040 serve 43 cities, or 87% of the Moroccan population.

The media claims that this sporting occasion represents a strategic opportunity for Morocco, which will invest up to 500 million euros in the renovation and expansion of 45 stadiums and training sites.

Also recalling that Morocco was chosen to host the African Cup of Nations in 2025, the daily indicated that this reinforced Morocco’s positioning “as a leading destination for football and travel enthusiasts.”

On Monday, the head of government, Aziz Akhannouch announced before the House of Representatives, “an ambitious plan” planned by Morocco to strengthen the capacity of airports and the country’s infrastructure in general.

Concerning airports, the announced objective is to be able to increase the reception capacity to 80 million passengers by 2030 compared to 38 million currently, in anticipation of the World Cup.

The expansion plan covers several airports, including the expansion of Rabat-Salé, Fez, Tangier and Marrakech airports. Agadir airport will undergo a major renovation to increase its capacity to 6.3 million passengers.

The Mohammed V airport in Casablanca should be expanded to reach a capacity of 24 million passengers based on the construction of a third terminal and the improvement of existing infrastructure, indicated the head of government.

Aziz Akhannouch stressed that Morocco stands out today for modern infrastructure that supports its economic development and competitiveness on the international scene. The Kingdom has strengthened its position in Africa, where it is among the continent’s leaders in terms of infrastructure, he said, citing the score of 85.8% in the 2024 African Governance Index.
