“They did not find themselves in the philosophy of the clubs”: in , he created the Tonnerre basketball club with young people from Bellevue

Created at the start of the 2023-2024 season, the Tonnerre basketball club is starting to make a name for itself in the basketball landscape. After moving from D4 to D3 at the end of its first season, the first team took the lead in Pool B, Saturday December 14, 2024 at the Bellevue gymnasium, after its net against the team of Saint-Renan – Plouarzel, with a score of 93 to 46.

“Revitalize basketball”

“Our desire was to revitalize basketball in this sector,” relates Jocelin Mbai-Assem, co-founding president. The majority of the first licensees have already played in clubs. I myself played at PL Lambézellec.” He continues: “We noticed that, around Bellevue, many young people played basketball outdoors. But they told us that they did not agree with the philosophy of current clubs. I asked them if they were interested in starting a club together and trying to compete. They told me that if I started a project, they would follow me.” In 2023, Jocelin Mbai-Assem then brought together several people with skills in the creation and operation of an association and in treasury. “We set up the office, chose a club name representative of the Brest region and we did our first training sessions at Traon Quizac,” he adds.

Juggle from one room to another

The TBC currently has around thirty members divided between team 1, a leisure team and a few women’s teams. To perpetuate the club and direct efforts towards the establishment of a youth sector, the Tonnerre basketball club would like to train on a single site. Currently, players have to juggle between the Traon-Quizac gymnasium and the Tissot gymnasium to train, with the Bellevue gymnasium only being reserved for championship matches.
