Denturist: a compliant and legal activity
Specialized in the design, manufacture and installation of dental prosthesesthe denturist designs medical solutions allowing patients — who have lost one or more teeth — to regain all the comfort and aesthetics of their smile.
The denturist thus brings his skills and know-how in addition to the dental surgeon, who retains the exclusivity of dental care and medical prescriptions.
« Dental surgeons have difficulty accepting this partial access to their profession! They actually attacked the State in 2004 to demand a ban. This case went all the way to the Court of Justice of the European Union, which ruled by authorizing this partial access. As a denturist, I am now officially registered with the Ministry of Health and Labor; I am therefore perfectly in order to carry out this activity », confides Thierry Supplie.
A profession that offers numerous benefits for public health
While by 2030, more than 20% of French people will be aged 65 or over, dental professionals will no longer be able to meet all of the needs of the population. “ Today, with 30% of dentists offering to make dental prostheses, it is simply impossible to accommodate the emerging needs of the aging population. Even if we increase the number of qualified dentists! »
Faced with this demographic and public health challenge, denturists carry out numerous tasks relating to the design of dental prosthesesfreeing up time for dentists, who can now focus on the core of their work, while treating more patients.
« Dental surgeons are often resistant to the idea of delegating this part of their work, because there is a real financial interest for them: they can in fact make significant capital gains between the purchase price of a prosthesis and the cost charged to patients. They make it their business even though it is not authorized ! The public health code prohibits them from making their activity a commercial activity. Our profession as denturists today highlights this irregularity. Some dentists only continue to fit the most expensive prostheses, thus neglecting the most precarious people, or even people in nursing homes. Which is a real problem! », specifies Thierry Supplie.
According to the latter, the benefits of denturology are numerous: apart from freeing up dentists’ time, this activity allows patients to save money – through access to cheaper prosthesis prices -, but also to Social Security and mutual insurance companies: “ Contacting a dental prosthesis specialist can in fact reduce the replacement of prostheses by half! It is therefore a question of economy on a large scale, and at all levels. We are able to equip up to fifteen patients each week, which frees up around fifty days for a dental practice which treats between 2 to 4 patients per month with this type of prosthesis. The calculation shows that 20 to 30 days are freed up in dental practices where practitioners work on average 3 days per week and more than 4 days with much shorter hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. »F
Benefits for the French economy
This activity also makes it possible, according to Thierry Supplie, to relocate a certain number of jobs to France, with the possibility of obtaining the Origine France label. “ Denturism recreates activity, new structures, and therefore economic dynamism and taxes! » concludes the President of France Denturiste.
