after refusing to comply, he ends up in prison and misses his father’s funeral

The Vienna judicial court sentenced this Monday, December 16, a 25-year-old man from Laveyron (Drôme) to a 12-month prison sentence with a committal warrant. This repeat offender was found guilty of refusing to comply after a chase between and Les Roches-de-Condrieu, specifies the Dauphiné Libéré.

The events took place on Saturday December 14. Around 8:15 p.m., police officers from the Lyon Anti-Crime Brigade (Bac) spotted a Renault Scénic which refused to stop despite their orders. The car then heads south, prompting the police to alert their colleagues in Vienna. Two police crews are strategically positioned on the quays and at the Laïcité and Associative Freedom roundabout.

Despite audible and visual warnings from law enforcement, the driver did not stop. A portcullis was deployed, causing a tire of the Scénic to puncture, but the fugitive continued on his way. His saga ended at Roches-de-Condrieu, where he lost control of his vehicle and hit a parked car. He then tried to flee on foot, but found himself blocked by a property fence where he was arrested by the police.

During his arrest, the police discovered 8 g of cannabis resin in the arrested person’s pocket. The latter, who was driving without a license (cancelled since October 2021), explained that he was overcome with emotion after leaving the funeral chamber in Vénissieux, where his father was buried. Following his arrest, the young man was also unable to fly to Algeria to attend the funeral.

He explains to the audience that he was “upset”, claiming not to have realized that the police were asking him to stop.

The defendant’s criminal record did not work in his favor. His record includes 16 previous convictions, mainly for theft, violence, carrying a weapon, rebellion and traffic offences. Before the court, the public prosecutor highlighted the inconsistency of his behavior with regard to the personal circumstances mentioned.

The court ordered the revocation of a previous stay. The defendant was taken to Saint-Quentin-Fallavier prison to serve his sentence.
