10 years after the massacre, 10 years after the spectacular mobilization which took place in Metz, where nearly 45,000 people marched in the streets to support the freedom of journalistswhere are we really?
A survey carried out by Viavoice on the occasion of the Journalism Conference in Tours indicated that 54% of those questioned believe that “the quality of information provided by journalists has deteriorated”. Fake newsfake news, fake news: words multiply to describe the lies that abound on social networks and where surges of hatred are daily occurrences. At the same time, journalists regularly face hostile reactions, even violent acts, when they go into the field.
The Metz Press Club has therefore decided to mobilize to put information in the center of the village with “Place de la Presse”, a completely independent event supported by local media* working together to offer a time for discussion open to all. A necessary meeting at a time when trust is fading and many no longer know what to trust.
Explanations from Philippe MARQUE, president of the Press Club:
Bringing the press and information to life
This meeting should allow everyone, and first and foremost young people and students from the Grand Est, to better understand the functioning, choices and constraints that punctuate the daily life of the media of the territory. Some of them were also able to participate in the production of a special edition of Charlie Hebdointended for distribution in schools. A “Freedom of the Press” exhibitionproduced by high school students, will even be visible on site.
This hand extended to young people comes from a desire of the Press Club to turn towards the citizens of tomorrow:
“We have been wondering for a while what the Press Club could do in terms of media education, knowing that many colleagues are working on it. The club aims to bring together the media, to bring us together. It seemed logical to us that it would ultimately be an intermediary space between the media and the general public, and possibly of course the youngest, the world of education. This is what we want to do with Place de la Presse. »
Cédric ROUILLON, director of RCF Jerico Moselle
Audrey ALVÈS, lecturer in information and communication sciences at the University of Lorraine, will speak with colleagues to share the University thoughts on media education. The students of the master’s degree in Journalism in Metz (MJMN) will be on site for a restitution of the work carried out on the web media Webullition.
The afternoon will incorporate a commemorative program to honor and return tribute to the 17 people killed during the attack of January 7, 2015. It is with this in mind that three press cartoonists with spicy pens, King Hector, John Lindringre and Remi Malingrewill host a round table on press cartoons.
“With the 10th anniversary of the attack on Charlie Hebdo, we are giving the event a dimension that goes beyond us. It was this event that unfortunately brought us together at the time. We said to ourselves that, perhaps, we should try, this time fortunately, to come together to build something with all those who are directly or indirectly interested in press freedom. »
Frédéric SCHNUR, publications director of ALL-METZ
The day will also be an opportunity to question what the press of tomorrow. A focus on artificial intelligence, its reality and the fantasies that surround it, will be offered, with a workshop on THE deepfake soundaudio manipulations.
