the essential
At the start of 2025, the town hall must conclude the restoration work on the framework of the Halle aux Grains. A symbol of local heritage in which the grain trade was flourishing.
The year 2025 promises to be rich in terms of urban planning projects with numerous construction sites set to begin in Carcassonne. The town hall announced it a few weeks ago: its intention through these projects consists of “to shape a certain living environment and strengthen local heritage”.
Among them is the upcoming restoration of the framework of the Halle aux Grains, a truly emblematic monument of heritage in the Aude capital. This is a first step in a broader plan to consolidate a centuries-old structure.
The objective seems clear in the eyes of the municipality: the preservation of the historic building is among the priorities. Keeping the site in good condition helps keep its role in mind. This is a “witness to a time when the grain trade was flourishing there”according to the town hall.
Part of the more resilient infrastructure
The frame itself has particularities specific to the time of its design: it has a meticulous layout coming in particular from the technique called “Arm of Jupiter”. This is characterized by the arrangement of the beams, chosen for their robustness, which favored the resistance of the structure to the ravages of time. This is not the case for certain other parties which, for their part, “have needed multiple interventions since the 18th century”specifies the City.
However, the time for restoration has finally arrived. To do this, the town hall is deploying a budget of €200,000 to consolidate the structure. In detail, the project is divided into two phases. The first consists of reinforcing the main framework, the second involves injecting resin to thoroughly treat this entire arrangement. To complete the intervention, the work will continue with the logging of the rafters as well as the complete treatment of the frame. According to the forecast duration put forward by the municipality, the project should be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
