Belgium reaches an important milestone with the first flight of an F-35A

On December 12, 2024, at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, Belgium reached an important milestone with the first flight of its F-35A aircraft. This fifth generation combat aircraft represents a crucial step in the modernization of the Belgian air and space component and reaffirms the country’s commitment to the F-35 program. The aircraft’s advanced capabilities are strategically important for Belgium and its allies, enabling them to effectively deal with current and future threats.

The F-35A is recognized as one of the world’s most advanced combat aircraft, designed to achieve air superiority. It has stealth characteristics that make it virtually undetectable by enemy radar systems, significantly improving its operational effectiveness. By providing air dominance, the F-35 helps avoid prolonged and costly conflicts like those of World War I, where ground forces lacked command of the skies, resulting in prolonged trench warfare. The training program

The first Belgian flight of the F-35 also marks the start of pilot conversion training. This complete program takes place within the Belgian unit dedicated to the conversion to the F-35, integrated into the 312th Belgian-American squadron based at Luke Air Base. The unit is responsible for training pilots and all personnel involved in the implementation of the F-35A.

Belgian pilots will train alongside their international counterparts, allowing them to master the aircraft’s complex systems while promoting interoperability with allied air forces. This rigorous training plays an essential role in preparing Belgian forces for future collaborative operations.

International cooperation and the F-35 program

Belgium’s participation in the F-35 program places it within a global coalition of 20 nations, including several NATO members and 13 European countries. This international network promotes enhanced cooperation in areas such as training, deployment and joint operations. Synergies with allies such as the Netherlands, Denmark and the United States will strengthen Belgium’s interoperability and its ability to effectively execute comprehensive joint missions.

The acquisition of the F-35A also strengthens Belgium’s position within the European Air Force.
