Who was Jean Stablinski?

The name Stab Vélodrome was not chosen at random. Indeed, Jean Stablinski is, without a doubt, THE great local cycling champion. Of Polish origin (he only obtained French nationality in 1948), he was born in Thun-Saint-Amand in the North, in 1932. His career, which began in 1952, ended in 1968 will be d elsewhere punctuated by 106 victories (including a rainbow jersey, won in 1962 in Salo di Garda, Italy).

After a first season run as an Independent, he joined the Gitane team led by Louis Caput or Rik Van Looy. Subsequently, he was notably teammate of Jean Forestier (green jersey of the Tour de France in 1957) or André Darrigade, before establishing himself as the preferred partner of Jacque Anquetil (first five-time winner of the Tour).

It should be noted that the man we would soon nickname Stab, before becoming a professional cyclist, was an underground miner on the Wallers Arenberg site. To go to work, he took the famous Trouée d’Arenberg every day before campaigning to integrate it into the Paris-Roubaix…
