another truck stuck under the viaduct

A truck crashed under the CN overpass passing over Main Street in Moncton on Tuesday morning. Two tow trucks intervened to free him. RCMP officers blocked traffic.

This type of incident is common despite the sign indicating the height of the infrastructure: three meters (11 feet). The error of judgment caused no injuries on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, it happens four or six times a year,” says City of Moncton fire chief Conrad Landry. We will report the incident to CN so that the company can send its engineers to assess the damage. So far there have only been small repairs here and there, because the infrastructure seems OK.”

A few curious people observed the stuck truck being towed.

“It’s not the first time this has happened, despite the sign, it’s really stupid,” one man commented. Do the drivers lack experience?

In July 2021, City of Moncton officials proposed installing infrared sensors that measure the height of trucks and then trigger flashing lights if the maximum height is exceeded. The project cost $180,000.

Municipal councilors remained doubtful and asked their administration to request a contribution from CN. In the meantime, they postponed the project, which never came to fruition.
