The victim’s parents demand compensation from the Confederation

The parents of the man stabbed to death in Morges (VD) in 2020 are turning against the Confederation and demanding damages of 200,000 francs, according to RTS. The victim’s family believes that the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (MPC) failed in this matter and could have prevented this murder.

“We decided to turn against the Swiss Confederation, because there are too many gray areas in this story. For us, there was far too much negligence on the part of the federal prosecutor in charge of the case,” explained the victim’s father on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on RTS.

“The family did not get all the answers they expected in this case. Above all, she seeks to understand once and for all that the Confederation was at fault in monitoring the defendant,” continues her lawyer Dario Barbosa.

The partner of the 29-year-old victim had already requested 25,000 francs in compensation from the Confederation in September 2023. His lawyer then noted that, since his provisional release, the defendant had committed numerous breaches in relation to the alternative measures which had been ordered. However, the prosecutor never reacted even though she had been informed by the police of these failings, the lawyer pointed out.

Poorly assessed danger

For the record, the Supervisory Authority of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Confederation (AS-MPC) had already singled out the MPC in this matter. In a report dating from March 2023, she estimated that he should have better assessed the dangerousness of this man during the period preceding his deadly attack.

This supervisory authority also deplored “the lack of reaction from the MPC after the Vaud authorities reported various violations of the substitution measures imposed”.

The perpetrator of the murder, a dual Turkish-Swiss national, was sentenced in early 2023 to 20 years in prison by the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona. He fatally stabbed the young Portuguese man on September 12, 2020 in a kebab shop in Morges. During his trial, he explained his actions by his fascination with the Islamic State (IS).
