During the municipal council meeting on Monday December 16, 2024, the City of Thionville voted for the establishment from December 1is January 2025 “a special function and commitment allowance in recognition of the increasing responsibilities they ensure for public order and tranquility” in favor of its municipal police officers.
More precisely, two existing allowances were merged to form one. But with an increase in “remuneration” as a result. “All agents will earn more, with more or less important catch-ups,” confirmed Emmanuel Bertin, deputy mayor in charge of Education and Human Resources.
This compensation is voted for while the municipal police must carry out ever more numerous and risky interventions. “They are risking their lives today,” underlined Pierre Cuny, the mayor of Thionville. Some agents will soon be equipped with tasers (knowing that the agents in Thionville are armed).

This increase in remuneration also aims to strengthen the attractiveness of the “profession” at a time when recruiting is becoming more complicated, in Thionville as elsewhere.
“We are in a form of transfer window between the communities. The agents leave to work elsewhere, sometimes for 100 or 150 euros more per month,” indicated the mayor who also mentioned requests from Luxembourg, in particular from the United States embassy which has recruited massively.
The municipality must therefore deal with a dip in staff numbers. Thionville currently has 22 municipal police officers. There are around ten missing to reach the 30 agents (+ 6 for Terville) needed. New recruitments have been announced for the month of March.
