A Zurich resident refuses to leave prison so as not to end up homeless

Convicted in 2020 for attempted murder, a 57-year-old Swiss prefers to stay behind bars to avoid wandering. He is serving his sentence in Pöschwies prison in Regensdorf (ZH). Formerly homeless, he fears falling back into precariousness after his release. Since May 2022, he has not spoken a word, even in front of the courts. According to his lawyer, solutions exist, such as housing and a disability pension, but the man rejects all proposals. On Wednesday, he refused to appear in court, which ordered an extension of his sentence.

Before remaining silent, the detainee confided that he wanted to finish what he had started in 2019: kill his former superior. This violent past is rooted in his fear of losing his job, which for him means returning to the street. These threats, expressed in 2022, prompted the court to sentence him to an additional two years and two months in prison, accompanied by therapeutic measures. From now on, it is the judicial administration which will have to decide whether the treatment will be carried out in prison or in a psychiatric clinic.
