A childminder from Chessy (Rhône) was indicted for “intentional homicide of a 15-year-old minor” and placed in pre-trial detention, the Lyon prosecutor's office said on Tuesday, December 10. The woman, aged 45, is suspected of being responsible for the death of a 22-month-old girl, which occurred on September 13 at her home.
That day, emergency assistance was deployed to the home of the childminder, located in Chessy, in Beaujolais. Despite the intervention of the emergency services, the little girl could not be saved. An investigation into the causes of death was then opened by the Villefranche-sur-Saône public prosecutor's office, and entrusted to the gendarmes of the Villefranche-sur-Saône company.
Died by asphyxiation
The findings of the autopsy, released at the end of last week, revealed that the little girl died of asphyxiation. This discovery marked a decisive turning point in the investigation, directing the investigations towards a criminal avenue. The nanny, who had been working in this profession for around fifteen years, was then placed in police custody on Tuesday December 5.
At the end of her police custody, the childminder was presented, on Friday, December 6, to an investigating judge as part of a judicial investigation opened for “intentional homicide of a 15-year-old minor”, specified the Lyon prosecutor's office. She was then indicted and placed in pre-trial detention. The Lyon public prosecutor's office has regained control of the case,
“because he has 'criminal' jurisdiction”he explained.
The childminder's approval had already been suspended after the events. The investigations, now under the authority of the investigating judge, are continuing to shed light on the circumstances of this tragedy.
