a stranger leaves more than 10 million euros to a small town that bears his name

The European commune of Thiberville received a very important legacy of 10 million euros from an unknown Ile-de- resident. The only reason: the man has the same last name as the name of the municipality.

An unexpected legacy which represents more than five times the city's annual budget. The town of Thiberville, nestled in the Eure, had the happy surprise in August to discover that it had inherited more than 10 million euros from a total stranger, reports L'Éveil Normand. The only thing the city and the deceased have in common: their name.

Roger Thiberville died at the age of 91 in Créteil on August 23. The Ile-de-France resident owned numerous valuable assets, particularly real estate, but no heirs. He therefore decided to contact a notary to give a nod to the European commune and to include it in his will.

The mayor of the city, Guy , told our colleagues how he heard the news: “(The notary) told us the story of this gentleman without descendants, who had chosen to bequeath us part of his property. I was a little surprised but I was going to be even more surprised when I found out the valuation of these goods.”

“We’re not going to spend it all”

A meeting took place at the end of November between all the people concerned to proceed with the succession in accordance with the rules. The municipal council having also granted the mayor delegation to accept or not any type of legacy without going through a vote, the procedure should go quickly.

With this money, the municipality intends to first erase its bank debt, to the tune of 407,037 euros, assures the local newspaper. Projects could also be carried out.

“We are not going to spend everything, we are going to manage this dowry as we have always done with our municipal budget, as a good father,” initially assures Guy Paris.

The councilor is thinking about “a synthetic football field, a new fire station, the renovation of the public garden” or even “the installation of a France services house”.

A stele as a man to Roger Thiberville

Roger Thiberville, for his part, seemed to lead a discreet and simple life despite his high-value Parisian apartments. According to L'Éveil Normand, he was a meteorological engineer and lived alone in a small apartment in the capital.

He himself had inherited it from his parents, then from his sister who was also single and without descendants.

A stele in tribute to Roger Thiberville where his ashes will be placed will be created thanks to his legacy, in the commune cemetery. A compensation which was not requested by the Ile-de-France resident, but which is close to the heart of the mayor of the city.
