This forest of more than 200 ha in Hauts-de-Seine will soon be protected by a new status?

It could soon obtain the same status as the Fontainebleau massif or the Bondy forest. There Malmaison forestlocated in the communes of Rueil-Malmaison, Vaucresson (Hauts-de-Seine) and La Celle-Saint-Cloud (Yvelines), is the subject of a public inquiry to be classified “protective forest “. The latter will end on December 23, 2024.

More than 200 ha to protect

With its 217 ha, including 200 located in Hauts-de-Seine, Malmaison constitutes the one of the main forest areasof the department located west of Paris. In order to preserve this natural space located in a highly urbanized territory the status of protective forest could therefore be granted to it. The protection perimeter would extend over the entire forest, as well as some private properties adjoining state land.

Concretely, this classification would prohibit “any change of use or any mode of occupation of the land likely to compromise the conservation or protection of afforestation”, explains article 141-2 of the forest code. This status, the most protective of this code, therefore protects against any deforestation and will make it impossible to artificialize land within the framework of urban projects.

A quarter of the Ile-de-France forests protected

France currently has only 168,000 ha classified as protective forests, or 1% of the metropolitan forest area. In Île-de-France, almost a quarter of forest areas obtained this ranking. These are the Fontainebleau massif (77), the Sénart forest (77/91), the Fausses-Reposes forest (92/78), the Rambouillet massif (78), the Arc Boisé du Val-de-Marne (77/91/94) of the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (78) and the forest of Bondy (93).

Led by the prefect of Hauts-de-Seine, the classification procedure “is part of an overall context of preservation and enhancement of non-urbanized spacesin Île-de-France”, develops the file linked to the public inquiry. If the procedure leads to positive conclusions, the classification decision will be subject to review.decree in Council of State.
