Warm you up with mulled wine during the Festival of Lights could be a distant memory, from this 2024 edition.

This year again, the festival will be under the spotlighta decree which will prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol on public roads in Lyon and its metropolitan area.

A rule which will be applied by the police, the authorities promise.

A decree from the prefecture

In the prefectural decree, signed by the new prefect delegate for defense and security, Antoine Guérin, we learn that all the evenings of the Festival of Lights are subject to this ban on drinking or selling alcohol in the street.

From December 5, 2024 to December 7, 2024 between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. and December 8, 2024 between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. are prohibited in all municipalities of the Lyon Metropolis: the consumption of alcoholic beverages in meetings on public roads outside places reserved for this purpose, the sale of take-out alcohol in any form whatsoever.

Rhône Prefecture

A text which is not a first, but which should be more respected this year thanks to the instructions passed to the hundreds of police officers mobilized on the ground.

The authorities will keep an eye on things

Questioned on the subject this Monday, Antoine Guérin warned visitors expected in the capital of Gaul: “If we participate in this event, we do so with respect for users.”

Mohamed Chihi, Security Assistant to Grégory Doucet, is a little more talkative: “We will first combat the behavior that poses a problem. We will focus on problematic installationswhich hinder flows, and verbalize dangerous behavior.”

Thus, mulled wine sellers on the street and without authorization should indeed be fined or at least forced to repack their pots with tempting smells. Questioned by news Lyonthe City of Lyon has not yet specified which bars will be able to sell their mulled wine and where customers can drink it, in moderation.

It remains to be seen whether the consumption of alcohol alone will also be punished by police officers.

Other prohibitions

Furthermore, the decree taken by the Rhône prefecture includes other prohibitions for Lyonnais, still during the evenings from Thursday to Sunday inclusive.

Thus, “the sale, possession, transport or use fireworks and pyrotechnic articles by individuals in public space or towards public space”.

The possession, transport or sale of fuel in a portable container “unless duly justified for private use”.
