Nearly one in four Swiss people say they drive after drinking alcohol. A particularly high rate in European comparison, warns the Accident Prevention Office (bpa) on Tuesday, which calls for caution as the holidays approach.

(Keystone-ATS) According to the ESRA study, carried out in 2023 in 39 countries, including 22 in Europe, 23% of Swiss say they have driven at least once after consuming alcohol in the last 30 days, notes the bpa in a press release. In Europe, the rate is only 15%.
The 2023 BPA survey, carried out in collaboration with 14 cantonal police forces, shows that nearly 4% of motorists drive after drinking alcohol and 0.4% have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of 0. .5 per thousand. At night, this rate is even higher, with one in seven drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Last year, 31 people were killed and 506 seriously injured in alcohol-related road accidents. Alcohol was thus involved in nearly 12% of accidents resulting in serious bodily injury. The situation has not improved in the last 10 years, deplores the bpa.
Young drivers: the best
The prevention body notes, however, that the measures targeting young drivers seem to be bearing fruit. Those under 30 display, on the whole, more responsible behavior than their elders, he writes.
As the end-of-year holidays approach, the bpa recommends giving up drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel or, if you have drunk, leaving your vehicle there and returning by taxi or public transport public. He recommends carpooling, with a driver designated in advance who will remain sober.
In any case, people who have been drinking must be prevented from getting behind the wheel. Guests are invited to offer non-alcoholic drinks.
