The Frontignan karate club hosted the Hérault karate championship and cup at the Ferrari sports complex in the town. 200 competitors (from 8 to 55 years old) from around thirty Hérault clubs competed in the combat disciplines on Saturday and kata on Sunday.
“Relationship of trust”
This is the first step for the regional championship which will be held next February in Saint-Orens, then towards the French championship.
The Hérault committee is organizing this event at the Frontignan karate club for the sixth consecutive year. “We have established a relationship of trust with the committee, explains Raphaël Rodriguez, new president of the club. We thank them for this trust and thank the town hall of Frontignan for the year-round support (with the provision of the Karabatic and Ferrari rooms).” Resulting or not from this beautiful harmony, the Frontignan athletes succeeded in their departmental championship: the 20 competitors were all on the podium, waiting for February.
Did the Olympic year have an impact on club registrations? “No, we have 70 licensees like last year. Karate is no longer an Olympic discipline (in favor of breaking or break dancing) despite the importance of this sport. We are in the top 3 of karate nations and we had a French Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021 with Steven da Costa.”
A discipline in good shape
Which does not prevent karate from being in good shape in Hérault. With her new president of the departmental committee Deli Muepu, Nathalie Trottin, technical director of the French Federation of Karate and associated disciplines (FFKDA) is delighted with all these performances: “Gilles Nardone, former president of Frontignan karate club, inspired the establishment of the elite team 34 that we are pursuing.
It contributes to the success of our karatekas by supporting them in their sporting advancement by providing them with technical service and also by providing assistance with their travel arrangements.”
Karate and its champions have not finished shining in Frontignan.
