Senegal, best student of the second quarter

Senegal has made significant progress in terms of good governance since the advent of the third alternation, reports the newspaper Liberation. These efforts have enabled the country to exit the “gray list” in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CFT).

During the Forum of National Interministerial AML/CFT Coordination Committees (FCI-CN), organized by the Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), the performance of member states was reviewed as part of the second round of mutual evaluations. Senegal has distinguished itself by its efforts, but it is recommended to intensify its actions to maintain this positive dynamic.

Mouazou Oumarou, director of policy and research at GIABA, highlighted the scale of Senegal’s efforts: “I would like to say unequivocally that Senegal is one of the most productive countries. The country is working to address its gaps identified in the mutual evaluation report. Thanks to adapted resources and the support of technical and financial partners, Senegal has managed to get off the gray list. However, it is crucial to sustain these efforts to remain among the highly rated countries. »

Explaining the reasons why a country can end up on the gray list, the Nigerian expert clarified that it depends in part on the size of its economy: “Previously, an economy had to reach a size of 5 billion dollars to be concerned . Today, this threshold has risen to $10 billion. Thus, countries with economies of this size are less likely to risk this classification. However, the main objective remains to get off the list and not fall back on it. »
