The Savoirs au terroir association will complete its annual cycle of conferences on Saturday December 7, 2024, by welcoming the co-founder of the Argenton-sur-Creuse History Circle, and writer, Pierre Brunaud. This scholar, whose research has led to the publication of numerous works on events and significant figures in local history, will speak on the theme « Claude Monet and other painters, visitors to Maurice Rollinat in Fresselines.”

Claude Monet, the most famous host

It will be based on the book Maurice Rollinat’s Visitors to Fresselineswhich he published in 2022, selecting thirty painters among the 131 names listed on this occasion. “Not all of them were received at his home, but came to the Creuse valley between 1883 and 1903, the year of his death,” indicates Pierre Brunaud, before mentioning the most famous host, Claude Monet, who traveled from the end of February to mid-May 1889, on the advice of one of his acquaintances, the journalist Gustave Geffroy, and was left with twenty-four paintings representing, for the most part, landscapes of the Creuse.

The speaker will also discuss Léon Detroy, Paul Madeline, Fernand Maillaud, Bernard Naudin, André Desgachons, Allan Osterlind, recalling often very lively meetings: “I shatter the idea that Maurice Rollinat was a bear. He loved to entertain guests, often sat at the piano and sang. »
