This Monday, December 2, 2024, the trial of a man in his forties begins before the Nanterre Assize Court (Hauts-de-Seine), tried for fatally shaking her baby in Boulogne Billancourt. He faces 30 years of criminal imprisonment.
A few fatal moments
The facts took place behind the closed doors of an apartment in February 2019. The father, with an uneventful profile, was then alone at home with his son, aged two months. After the infant continued to cry, the accused then shook him. In critical condition, the child was hospitalized in Necker, where he died.
Very quickly, the doctors detected the causes of the child's death: shaken baby syndrome. A report was then made to the Hauts-de-Seine public prosecutor's office, and the father was arrested. The latter admitted the facts. According to him, he had never been violent before, but lost control for a few moments. These proved fatal. The accused was indicted and placed under judicial supervision.
An increasing syndrome
Shaken baby syndrome is an abuse with often fatal consequences. The phenomenon has been increasing in recent years. Between 2017 and 2021, it doubled in Île-de-France, the AP-HP declared in a press release.
From a criminal point of view, these cases are difficult to judge. The denial of the accused is confronted with rigorous expertise on the causes of the baby's death. In March 2024, the father and grandfather of an infant who died from shaking were tried at the Paris Assizes. The two accused blamed each other for the tragedy. The father was finally convicted.
