« My son has not had French lessons since September 2 », this is what we could read on one of the signs of the rally which took place in front Jean-Jacques Rousseau college of Othis (Seine-et-Marne).
Indeed, Wednesday November 27, parents and elected officials from the FCPE, accompanied by the deputy for the 7th constituency of Seine-et-Marne Ersilia Soudaisgathered in front of the establishment to protest against the lack of a French teacher since the start of the school year. A situation which penalizes nearly 150 students from 6th to 4th grade.
More than 1,000 hours of lessons lost
Here, as elsewhere in the department, they are targeting the absence of teachers, particularly those of French, one of the most important subjects for students. “Since the start of the school year, three 6th grade classes, two 5th grade classes and two 4th grade classes, i.e. more than 150 students, do not have a French teacher,” says Belinda Borsali, vice-president of FCPE 77.
For the parents mobilized this Wednesday, the concern is strong. “How will the children be able to catch up? This is not possible,” reacts a parent. Worse, “it brings additional inequality compared to other middle school students but also his class compared to families who have the means to pay for a private teacher,” explains the mother of a child concerned.
In their sights, everyone has the national Brevet diploma, which will become, in 2027, compulsory to progress to second grade. “If they don’t have the classes, how will they get their diploma? The college builds the high school, then the post-baccalaureate then access to the world of work. We must think that today's children are tomorrow's future,” they continue.
A problem that will “get worse”
For Ersilia Soudais, deputy for Seine-et-Marne, it is a national problem“but who is accentuated by the isolation of this territory. Where is the equality of opportunity? », she growls. For her part, the vice-president of FCPE 77 points to “a problem with the attractiveness of this profession and the lack of motivation of teachers. The rectorate informed us that it had had potential candidates but thatThey all refused the job. This is not acceptable. »
For the latter, moreover, the problem risks getting worse next year, with expanding need groups to fourth and third grade students. “We already don't have any teachers, it can't get better. And they don’t listen to us… If we don’t do anything, we’re heading towards disaster,” she warns.
Faced with this situation, “we are going to create a collective of parents and will start a petition to try to make things happen. And if we have to go to court, we will go. »
For her part, the MP for the 7th constituency announced that she would write in the coming days a letter to the Minister of National Education. “The students cannot stay like this,” she concludes.
A designated teacher
Contacted, the rectorate ensures “understand the situation and work to resolve the problem. » “We reinforced our 2nd degree brigade this year. We can replace 99.1% of absences longer than 15 days in all disciplines », we say at the Académie de Créteil.
Problem according to the latter, there remain some areas in tension, particularly in Seine-et-Marne. This is the case in Othis “where the replacements refuse to go. And, besides that, we have a lot of difficulty recruiting possible teachers with at least a Bac + 5 level.”
However, the rectorate would like to point out thata teacher has just been appointed“and that he should quickly take up his duties at the Othis college. It will fill in some of the holes. »
