Revaluation of retirement pensions based on inflation: “The State did not follow the legal formula”, protest the trade union organizations in Aude

At the start of the week, Prime Minister Michel Barnier confirmed the increase in retirement pensions by 0.8% from January 1, 2025. An increase considered insufficient in view of inflation for the Aude trade union organizations.

“We will gather next Tuesday, December 3 to protest against the government's attempt to divide retirees.” For Aude trade union organizations, like others throughout , the indexation of retirement pensions of 0.8% on January 1, 2025 is not enough. “The legal calculation formula is based on the average inflation for one year, observed three months before the revaluation, i.e. in October 2024, recalled Bernard Dauphiné of the national interprofessional union of supportive retirees. The increase should therefore have been set at 2.2%, in line with inflation. The State did not follow the legal formula by instead increasing pensions by half of inflation.”

In this sense, the increase should have been set at 1.1%. “Not content with not respecting the legal formula, the Barnier government is creating differences among retirees”supported Jeanne Morer of the Unitary Union Federation (FSU), referring to the commitment indicated in the amendment of the senatorial right. This underlines that small pensions (below the minimum wage) would be revalued a second time, up to the inflation observed on July 1. Which would correspond to a second increase of 0.8% to reach 1.6% indexation.

We also contribute to life in society

“Taking such measures only accentuates the delay suffered by retirees since 2017”noted Denis Renard, from the union of retirees. He referred to the cumulative losses over seven years: “Pensions only increased by 13.6%, for inflation of 19.5%.”

To demonstrate their opposition, Aude union organizations are calling for a rally this Tuesday, December 3. Departure will be scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in front of the premises of the CPAM (Primary Health Insurance Fund) in . “We will stop in front of the ARS before going to the prefecture,” said Denis Renard.

“It is not normal that retirees, after having contributed all their lives, do not have the necessary means to attend plays or go to the cinema, shouted, Gérard Petit, president of the LSR (leisure and solidarity of retirees from Aude). More than one in two among this segment of the population in France cannot go on vacation.” For her part, Jeanne Morer concluded by supporting the point: “We also contribute to life in society. Retirees are active in numerous associations, many of them also becoming elected representatives of the Republic.”

Demonstration in at the call of the group of nine

Like the Carcassonne union organizations, those in Narbonne also intend to demonstrate this Tuesday, December 3. A gathering is planned for 10:30 a.m. in front of the sub-prefecture, while before that, a delegation will be received in the premises of state services. “We are faced with a negative policy regarding retirement pensions, purchasing power and health with a deterioration of coverage. In an unstable political context, we must make ourselves heard because it is possible to make another policy without attacking retirees” explains Jean-Pierre Maisterra from FSU.

The demonstrators, who are demanding the indexation of pensions on average wages and not on the evolution of prices as today, therefore say they want “fight a government which attacks the weakest with a policy which aims to ensure that there are more and more poor retirees in France”.
