This Saturday, the Georges Pompidou stadium will be the scene of the 8th round of the Coupe de France between the amateurs of FC Valence and the professionals of FC Martigues. Six divisions separate the two teams.
“It’s the Coupe de France, anything can happen”. These were the words of the president of FC Valence Brigitte Armand, in our edition of Thursday October 28. This Saturday, at 6 p.m., its senior team, which plays in Regional 3, will challenge FC Martigues, a professional club playing in Ligue 2, for the 8th round of the Coupe de France. For the second time in a row, the Valence team will leave its Jean-Perdrix stadium to occupy that of Pompidou. After heroically taking out Marignane (N2), four levels above, FC Valence this time comes up against a team six times superior to it. Waiting for the reality of the green rectangle.
A look back at FC Valence’s journey
Before dreaming of a new exploit, the Valentinois can look back for a moment. The FCV passed six rounds of the national cup, successively eliminating Châteauneuf-sur-Isère (D2), ES Rachais (R2), US Vallée Jabron (D2), US Bussières (D2), Aix FC (R2) and therefore Marignane ( N2). In their journey, the Valentinois came out “stronger than them” three times. Elies Khodja's men now face a mountain, although the start of the season is very delicate.
FC Martigues, the national cup to reassure yourself
Promoted this year to Ligue 2, FC Martigues is experiencing a complicated start to the season in the antechamber of the French elite. Nine defeats, three draws and two victories later, the Martégaux are bottom of the second division. In the previous round, Thierry Laurey's men easily disposed of FC Allobroges Asafia (R2) with a score of 5-0, at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble.
Towards a large crowd at Pompidou?
It is against a new “little one” that the Martigues professionals will have to strike this Saturday. Hoping that the Valentinois give them more trouble… In this mission, FC Valence should count on the attendance of Pompidou, which should be greater than the 751 souls who gathered during the last exploit.
Whatever the outcome of this 8th round, this poster already has the flavor of a victory for Valence FC, playing at the lowest regional level, with the reception of a professional club. What happens next on the pitch will only be a bonus…
FC Valence-Martigues kicks off this Saturday at 6 p.m., at the Georges-Pompidou stadium.
