new salinity peak in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, residents are getting organized

On November 27, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced that due to a new episode of salinity, tap water will be unfit for consumption from November 29 to December 7. This situation, caused by the exceptionally low level of the Maroni River, forces residents to adapt once again.

From November 28, residents began to go to fresh water distribution points set up by the municipality. Jean-Marc, 47, from the Charbonnière district, expresses his concern:

This is the second time in a month that we have had to source our supplies elsewhere. With children at home, you can't take risks.

Élodie, 19, student near the bus station, adds:

Even if it's not for long, I prefer to prepare in advance. With the classes, it's easier to have a few containers filled.

Authorities have set up collection points at the following locations:

  • – Bus station
  • – Charbonnière district
  • – Jacques Voyer School
  • – Mission locale
  • – Balaté Bridge

People with advanced kidney disease continue to receive bottled water through dialysis centers.
