Recently, work was carried out to reduce the speed from 15 to 20 km/h in the Mas de Bonnet district.
For this second part of the mandate, the municipality of Villefranche-de-Rouergue has declared war “on crazy drivers”. Several developments have been deployed to reduce speeds in the residential areas of the town. Recently, it was in the Mas de Bonnet district that work was carried out to secure pedestrians.
“There is a real speed problem here, the cars drive too fast”testifies Christophe Vabre, district representative. “We always had to be careful when we left the house. There are also a lot of children in the area.” After several meetings between residents and the municipality, resources were deployed on this axis, considered dangerous. Every day, 1,700 vehicles circulate there.
The town hall has carried out several speed measurements and noted an average of 60 km/h, while the area is limited to 50 km/h. Some drivers even cross the neighborhood at 100 km/h.
Secure pedestrians
“We worked on a chaussidou in order to clearly mark the limit between the road and the sidewalk, so that pedestrians are safe,” explains Jean-Claude Carrié, 1st deputy mayor. “Despite the roundabout, some drivers were hurtling like rockets. We raised the curbs to create this walking path “.
A stop sign has been added in the area, on the main road, as well as speed awareness signs. The speed has also been lowered to 30 km/h. “These developments were co-constructed with local residents,” adds the deputy mayor. “In six months, we will take new speed readings to take stock. We hope that it will drop by 15 to 20 km/h”. The municipality is also calling on Villefranchois to report road development issues in their neighborhood. As a reminder, the municipal police recently equipped themselves with a mobile radar to take speed measurements in the town.
