While an appeal will be studied before the Administrative Court of Appeal of Lyon next Thursday, the town hall of Vastres and the company BayWa.re reaffirm “a reduction” of the project to 3 wind turbines, abandoning the two masts closest to Fay- sur-Lignon.
Since 2007, the wind project in the municipality of Vastres has been the talk of the town. Seventeen years later, and after different projects, multiple twists and turns and procedures, nothing has yet been decided.
A hearing on December 5
A hearing is in fact scheduled for Thursday, December 5 before the Lyon Administrative Court of Appeal which will examine two appeals. That of the commune of Fay-sur-Lignon, the LPO, the ULM club and residents, and a second appeal from the Aura Region and the Ardèche communes of Mars and Saint-Julien-d'Intres.

A file on which the mayor of Vastres and the company BayWa.re return to recall “the reduction of the wind project. » “The current project is three wind turbines and that's it! », recalls the mayor of the town, Jean-Luc Chambon.
Concretely, two of the five wind turbines envisaged in the last version of the project have disappeared. These are those, facing the town of Fay-sur-Lignon, which were planned at a place called Le Pau. Only the three wind turbines – 150 meters high at the ends of the blades – at a place called Les Platayres remain current.
“The living environment of the inhabitants” threatened
In a press release addressed to the editorial staff, opponents of the project, united within the collective of residents and the association for the protection of exceptional landscapes of Mézenc (APPEM), are counting on this hearing on December 5 in Lyon to stop the case. The appeal must judge the prefectural decree of August 16, 2023 authorizing the project. Opponents “expect a lot from this hearing because this project has been threatening the living environment of residents, the beauty of the Mézenc landscapes and the richness of its biodiversity for too many years. […] The cancellation of this authorization would therefore make it possible to stop the authorized project, but also to make the company BayWa.re abandon its disastrous extension project. It would provide relief to residents who, in the vast majority, do not want an industrial site under their windows,” explain the opponents.

Economic benefits
For his part, the mayor of Vastres remains optimistic about the appeal. “I hope that we will win our case and that we will be able to build our three wind turbines,” confides Jean-Luc Chambon.
Because financially, the project would offer significant economic benefits. “For Vastres, the three wind turbines represent 120 to 150,000 euros in revenue per year on a municipal budget of between 200 and 250,000 euros. It doubles our budget. Today, with the flood of October 17 and 500 to 600,000 euros of damage, I would see it differently…”, observes Jean-Luc Chambon.
