Sorting of packaging is progressing in Haute-Garonne

the essential
The latest figures from Citeo on packaging sorting in and Haute-Garonne have just been revealed. The increase in sorting of plastic packaging is significant.

Are the inhabitants of Haute-Garonne good students when it comes to sorting? Citeo, a company specializing in packaging sorting, has just published key figures concerning the sorting of household packaging and paper at regional and departmental level. His study shows that in this area, the trend is progressing in Haute-Garonne.

Last year, in the department, each resident sorted on average 59.7 kg of household packaging and paper, an overall performance up 3.4% compared to 2022 with a significant increase in the sorting of light packaging of 17% compared to the previous year. In detail, this concerns 46.4 kg of household packaging – light packaging and glass – (+4.9% vs. 2022) and 13.3 kg of paper (-1.6% vs. 2022).

At the same time, the volume of sorted glass packaging fell in (-2.6%), as on a national scale. “This is explained by a 2.5% drop in the deposit in 2023,” explains Antoine André, regional director of Citeo.

Sorting of plastics up 53%

The average sorting figure per inhabitant is, however, lower than at the regional and national level. In the region, residents sorted on average 74.5 kg of household packaging and paper each, which is 1.5 kg more than the previous year. While at the national level, sorted packaging represents 71 kg per person. In Occitania, we also note the 23% increase in sorting of plastic packaging and even 53% for Haute-Garonne! “A performance linked to the simplification of the sorting process in Haute-Garonne from January 1. We were able to put yogurt pots, trays and many containers in the sorting bin, this increased the quantity of packaging collected,” emphasizes Antoine André.

Although sorting is practiced more assiduously, there is still work to be done in this area. “It is said that a quarter of the waste in the black bin could be sorted. This requires the mobilization of everyone. This is a major challenge that awaits us to achieve our objectives set at European and French level. We support communities in these issues. »
