Jules Oppin, from Varzy, best apprentice butcher in Nièvre at the Maf competition

The young apprentice from the Lièvre butcher's shop passed the first qualification milestone by finishing as “best young butcher” in the department at the Marzy campus. Qualified for the regional finals in , he hopes to participate in the national final of Maf, “One of the Best Apprentices in ”.

The C2M in Marzy hosted this departmental competition on Monday, November 18, highlighting the talent and know-how of apprentices from Nièvre enrolled in CAP 2nd year. These were the qualifications for the competition “One of the best apprentices in France” (MAF).

The jury was made up of two personalities from the world of butchery: Damien Godignon, artisan butcher in Saint-Pierre-le-Moutier, representative of the Butchery Union and Tom Napela, former C2M apprentice, medalist of excellence at WorldSkills Boucherie 2023.

In front of four other candidates

Jules Oppin was in the running with four other candidates, all educated at Marzy.

On the program: a completely boneless shoulder of lamb to roast, a rump steak to debone, make a roast beef in the rump fillet, a neck of lower veal chop to debone, a roast veal in the nut to make, all in four hours of time. Also on the program: an hour of meat decoration.

“I did everything to finish 1st despite strong competition. My goal since I arrived at the Lièvre butcher shop is to qualify for the national final,” explains the young man.

He will be entered this weekend in the butchery competition in Charolles (Saône-et-) and will subsequently participate in the regional finals of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, in January, in Dijon (the precise date of which is not yet determined). His goal will therefore be to finish 1st, with the support of his teachers.

After his CAP butchery, he aims to complete a CAP as a charcutier and caterer in one year then a Professional Certificate (BP) in butchery.

Jules Oppin finished 1st in the Maf departmental competition.

Jules Oppin, originally from Varzy, is only 16 years old. He currently works in Christophe Lièvre's two butcher shops in Clamecy and Varzy. “It’s a great hope,” his boss said of him.

“Everyone supports me. Especially since the company was also awarded by the CFA for its commitment to apprenticeship (on October 21),” underlines the young man.

He received a check and a certificate.
